Re-modelling of a Suffolk House
This
house, once the Rectory, had undergone some unfortunate
improvements in the past. There were extensive flat roofs,
steel windows, and a general loss of architectural character.
The project successfully reintroduced some of the ‘gothic’ idiom
that was lacking. The remodelling included new chimneys,
a cupola, pitched roofs, and entrance porch. The loss of
a bedroom, in order to open up the stair well, was compensated
for by a room within the new roof over the kitchen wing.
The interior was improved by adding back appropriate architectural
details, such as stair newels, door surrounds and cornices,
and by the client’s well-chosen decorations scheme.
